Programs

Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)
Maryland’s Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program, provides cash assistance to families with dependent children when available resources do not fully address the family’s needs and while preparing program participants for independence through work. The family must cooperate with child support, participate in work activities, comply with substance abuse provisions, must meet financial and technical eligibility requirements, and earned and unearned income cannot exceed the benefit level paid for the assistance group size.
 
Intake/Eligibility: The following are eligible for the program: • Have a child 18 years of age or younger, or • Be pregnant, or • Be 18 years of age or younger and the head of your household
Temporary Disability Assistance Program (TDAP)
The Temporary Disability Assistance Program provides cash benefits to eligible disabled individuals. Eligibility requirements include verifying the disability (a licensed medical practitioner must complete a medical report). TDAP applicants who are disabled for 12 months or more must file an application for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). TDAP recipients receive benefits for only 12 months out of a 36-month period unless they are pursuing SSI.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, called the Food Supplement Program (FSF) in Maryland, formerly known as Food Stamps, helps low-income household buy the food they need for good health. Applicants must file an application, be interviewed, and meet financial and technical eligibility factors. Some people who have little or no money may quality for Expedited Food Supplement benefits right away. An interview is required, and they must verify identity. Everyone has a right to apply for SNAP benefits.

Refugee Transitional Cash Assistance (RTCA) and Medical Assistance
Refugee Transitional Cash Assistance (also referred to as “RTCA”) is a state-administered and federally-funded temporary financial assistance program. It is available to qualified legal immigrants to allow them sufficient time to secure employment and become economically independent.
 
Target Population: Qualified legal immigrants

Maryland Children’s Health Insurance Program (MCHP)
Maryland Children’s Health Insurance Program (MCHP): This program provides full health benefits for children up to age 19, and pregnant women of any age who meet the income guidelines. MCHP provides care through a variety of Managed Care Organizations (MCOs).
