After nearly a decade working as a contractor at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Jessica F. faced an unexpected setback when workforce reductions impacted her role. After 9 years and 8 months of dedicated service, she suddenly found herself navigating a highly competitive job market.
Determined to move forward, Jessica began applying for positions—submitting hundreds of applications. Despite securing an informational interview and one formal interview, the responses she received were often discouraging. After months of searching, she began to lose hope and even considered relocating out of state in search of better opportunities.
That’s when Jessica learned about the BioHub program. With a passion for science and laboratory work, she eagerly joined Cohort 2. The experience proved transformative. By the end of the two-week program, Jessica regained her confidence and sense of purpose. She was reminded of her value, her skills, and the possibilities still ahead.
With continued support from WorkSource Montgomery, Jessica worked closely with Career Advisor Maurice to strengthen her Maryland Workforce Exchange (MWE) profile and refine her resume. She also received encouragement from staff members Mona Liza and John Allen, whose support helped keep her motivated and focused throughout her job search.
Today, Jessica is back working at the same NIH center where she previously served—this time through a new role with Axle Informatics that was created to bring her back to the team. She is grateful to continue building her career in Maryland, a place she proudly calls home.
