Support During Layoffs

WorkSource Montgomery understands that a layoff from your job is a very stressful time, and it affects every aspect of your life. In many instances, it can come as a complete surprise and leave you in a state of shock, confusion, and even fear. WSM can provide you valuable information, support, and resources to get you through this vulnerable transition period.

Here is a list of tips and resources that may help you during this challenging process:

This is a good time to think about taking some online courses for upskilling or reskilling in high-demand industries as you contemplate the next step in your career. We offer an online virtual career services platform called “SkillUp® Montgomery” where you have FREE access to over 7,000 workplace skills, business, and IT training courses for up to 6 months. One of the first things you will likely need to do is file for Maryland Unemployment as soon as possible. While WSM does not handle such matters, the Maryland Department of Labor is one of our partners. They have provided the list of resources below:


WorkSource Montgomery’s Financial Empowerment Center through our partnership with the Latino Economic Development Center and United Way can provide valuable assistance during this challenging time.

The bilingual financial empowerment team can help with:

  • Offer financial planning and counseling services to help individuals manage their finances during the transition period.
  • Provide guidance on budgeting, debt management, and accessing emergency financial assistance.
  • Guidance setting short and long term-financial goals and assistance in working toward those goals.
