In a recent podcast episode of What’s Happening MoCo?, Anthony Featherstone, Executive Director of WorkSource Montgomery, offered timely insight into the current job and internship landscape in Montgomery County. As federal workforce reductions continue, Featherstone noted a rise in highly skilled professionals—particularly former federal employees—seeking new opportunities. At the same time, there remains consistent demand for support among young adults, returning citizens, older workers, and people with disabilities.
“We’re seeing a lot of federal workers… highly compensated, highly educated… seeking assistance,” Featherstone shared. WorkSource Montgomery is actively responding to this shift by offering a wide range of resources through its job centers, including mobile and virtual options, to meet residents where they are. Services include resume support, job fairs, skills training, and direct job placement.
A key part of that effort is Mobilize Montgomery—a county-wide initiative bringing together government, business, and community partners to support job seekers and employers. Through this coalition, we’re coordinating resources, increasing access to services, and helping individuals and businesses adapt to economic changes more effectively.
Featherstone encourages job seekers to explore these resources by visiting mobilize-montgomery.com or stopping by the American Job Center (Wheaton) on Georgia Avenue. “We can pull you into the services that are available,” he said. “Whether you’re just starting out or starting over, we’re here to help.”
When it comes to job hunting, Featherstone offered three simple but effective tips: know yourself, target your search, and present a polished, professional image. “You can articulate your skills and your value proposition… whether you’re in a grocery store talking to somebody or at a job fair networking,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of preparation for interviews—not just in how you dress, but in how well you understand the company and role. “It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed… but most importantly, show up informed, with thoughtful questions.”
Featherstone’s message to the community was clear: you don’t have to navigate the job market alone. “You’re not alone when it comes to finding your next opportunity… it always starts with a conversation.”
